The painting needs cleaning and its frame needs restoration. It will be sent in its current condition. (Please request photos of all inscriptions on the back and of the current condition of the frame.)
BIOGRAPHY:
Clarence Henry Roe was the eldest son of Robert Henry Roe, a famous Victorian painter. Born in Birmingham in 1850, he later moved with his family to Hampstead in London. He lived in Scotland, but in 1860 settled in Yorkshire, where he would spend most of his life. The Roe family was composed of numerous artists with different specializations.Among these were the three brothers of Clarence, Robert Herbert, Percy, Colin Graeme and also one of his sisters, Eva Constance counted as a fine portraitist. Clarence’s uncle, Alfred Frederick, better known as Fred Roe, was a notable artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected to the RBA in 1895.
