Biography:

Julio Verdié was a Uruguayan painter, novelist, poet and playwright born in Montevideo on January 3, 1900. He began his artistic training at the Círculo Fomento de Bellas Artes and was secretary of the National School of Fine Arts from its foundation until 1959. In addition to his activity as a painter, he published books of poetry, novels and theater. His works were premiered at the Teatro del Pueblo in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and at the Teatro Polómico in Montevideo (Uruguay). He was founder of the “group 8” in 1959 along with Carlos Páez Vilaró, Oscar García Reyno, Lincoln Presno, Alfredo Testoni, Miguel Pareja, Raúl Pavlotzky and Américo Spósito. He made numerous study trips through Europe and settled in Paris as a mission from the National Commission of Fine Arts, enrolling in the Abstract Art Workshop directed by Edgard Pillet and J. Dewasne. In the sixties he moved through informalism with a determined expressive will and unmistakable personal discoveries. He died in Montevideo in 1988.
