Raúl Pavlotzky (1918 -1998)
Pavlotzky studied with Guillermo Laborde and José Cúneo and then joined in the 1950s with the group of geometricians of which José Pedro Costigliolo and María Freire were precursors. He also found himself among the early concretists. Later he was founder of the “Group 8”, another point of reference for the vernacular avant-garde. From the 50s until the end of the 70s he was among the experimental artists of Uruguay.
Since 1942 he participated in National Salons and then from 1943 in Municipal Salons. In 1942 he won the Prize for foreign artists at the National Fine Arts Hall. He received numerous awards in the 40s, 50s and 60s in the Municipal Halls and the award-winning works today make up the collection of the Blanes Museum. In 1959 he was awarded First Prize at the National Salon and that year he was also honored at the Punta del Este international art exhibition. His successes continued and in 1960 he received First Prize at the “Warthein” Contest in Buenos Aires. In 1969 he won First Prize in the FUNSA Contest.
It is also worth remembering his contribution to screen printing, not only in his own expressive field but as an accomplished technician who brought to the plate with great refinement, many images of his colleagues today appreciated in galleries, museums and buildings.
